Washington State University Hack: Details & Information

Washington State University administrators say that they are trying to stop a hack they’ve known about for a month. Their progress is still unknown at this time, but the IT Department suggests that students change all their passwords.
The Spokesman-Review reports administrators notified students and staff Thursday they noticed suspicious activity in the school’s email and directory systems July 8. The reason for the delay, Interim President Daniel Bernardo says, was because “It was important that we keep our attackers unaware of our course of action until initial countermeasures were under way.”
The school has been working with federal agencies and a private security firm, but administrators don’t believe that any sensitive SSN or banking numbers have been leaked.
Update: We reached out to the WSU IT Staff this morning and they had nothing to add to the story except that they’d received an email from the President of WSU two weeks ago. That statement is available below:
