Matt Stonie beat the legendary Joey Chestnut to win the Nathan’s Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island–ending Chestnut’s bid for a ninth straight victory, and getting a lot of headline writers trying to come up with clever variations on Chestnut being roasted.
People love Joey, of course, but 23-year-old Matt has really become a favorite in the world of competitive eating. At least Joey can take comfort in losing to a fellow native of San Jose, California. Also, Matt was a really good sport about the whole thing. He couldn’t really spike the hot dog, after all. Matt knocked back 62 hot dogs and buns, literally beating Chestnut by a couple of dogs.
The third place winner ate 32 hot dogs. It’s competitive, people.
Anyway, it was just three weeks ago that Matt qualified in Las Vegas to move on to Coney Island. There wasn’t much suspense about him making the cut, of course, but check out the happy scene that landed Matt to a big victory today…
