It’s time for the 99th annual Indianapolis 500–and there’s a lot of people worrying about today’s big race after all kinds of accidents have happened in recent days. There’s been plenty of flips, and racer James Hinchcliffe got impaled with a broken suspension part after wrecking his Honda on Monday–but he’s doing great now, folks!
But have things always been so dangerous? No, they were a lot worse. Check out this vintage video of the first Indy 500, back when racers had to bring along their own mechanics. Not all of them managed to stay inside the race cars on fast turns, either. We hate to spoil anything, but we’ve already revealed that Ray Harroun won the first-ever race. He’s dead now. All of these people are dead, but we’re still impressed that they lived past 1911…
