[photo: Justin K. Aller/Getty]Many people suffer with sleep apnea. There are many ways to control or fix it, but few take the step that Boston Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli is going to take. Napoli will undergo a facial-reconstruction operation hoping that will cure the condition that causes his airway to become obstructed.
He will have the surgery on November 4, and told WEEI.com in a text message that he has dealt with sleep apnea for his entire career. This is something that Napoli probably wishes he would have done years ago especially if it works for him. Sleep apnea has caused many major problems in people’s lives in trying to get a good night’s sleep.
The hope is that Napoli has the surgery and then is able to perform at a high level again for Boston in 2015. The surgery will separate the front portions of the lower and upper jaw and moving them forward to allow more room behind the tongue. It sounds like a radical surgery but obviously it is needed for Napoli. Hopefully everything goes well with that next month.
