UCLA Goes Underwater, Students Start Surfing [VIDEOS + PICS + MEMES]

So how were things on the campus at UCLA yesterday? Very wet, courtesy of a broken water main that left UCLA flooded in the wake of a 30-foot high geyser. It took three hours to turn off the water supply. That added up to over 8 million gallons of water hitting UCLA hard. The break happened around 3:30 pm, too, so there were plenty of people on campus. It looked a lot like this….

The parking decks of UCLA quickly filled up. Sadly, so did Pauley Pavilion–where you’ll find the UCLA basketball court, which was still looking really nice after a $136 million renovation from less than two years ago. While the city was left dealing with a 15-foot sinkhole, the staff at UCLA began to try to undo the damage to Pauley. That began with trying to squeegee up the equivalent of a minor lake…

And here’s some video that really tells the UCLA story. It’s the geyser, the aftermath, and the inevitable sight of students deciding that it’s all an excuse for some good clean fun…

In fact, some students decided that what you lose on the basketball courts, you get back with a new pool…

And, of course, the whole fiasco was documented through selfies and memes and more–all of which are collected here. So check out the chaos as UCLA begins to recover from Tsunami Tuesday and heads into a more irritating Wet Wednesday. We’re pretty sure that some students are still going to be seeing the bright side here…
