NBA "Drafts" Baylor's Isaiah Austin

The 2014 NBA Draft was held on Thursday night and while 60 of the best players from around the world were selected to begin their professional careers, there was one moment that topped them all. Baylor’s Isaiah Austin, who was diagnosed with Marfan syndrome a week ago, was given his moment in the spotlight when NBA commissioner Adam Silver “drafted” Austin for the entire NBA. The moment brought the fans to their feet at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn….

Austin won’t be able to continue his career because of the rare genetic disorder so it was very nice to see the NBA take a few moments out of the draft to give Austin a chance to get drafted and allow him on stage for his moment with the commissioner. Austin was likely going to be a high draft pick if he was healthy and got “drafted” in the middle of the first round.
Hopefully other leagues can take a page out of the NBA and Silver’s book on this and maybe give some other players a chance to experience being drafted if they can’t because of medical problems. It will be a night that Austin never forgets.
