A major victory for everyone toking up in the Nation’s capital today as Washington, DC’s city council voted to significantly ease marijuana laws in the district. Which means that we already have to re-consider our 20 Trashiest Spring Break Destinations.
Anyway, by a near unanimous vote (!!!), the council ruled that possession and private consumption of the drug in small amounts would be decriminalized. Mayor Vincent Gray is expected to sign the bill into law.
The District of Columbia will soon join 17 states that have decriminalization laws on the books. Before today’s historic and amazing passing, public consumption and possession of an ounce or less of marijuana were both criminal offenses that could cost you up to $1,000 or six months in prison. When the bill goes into effect this summer, possession will be deemed a civil offense with a light fine of $25. That’s right…people in DC that are caught with Marijuana will only have to pay the equivalent of half of an 8th. Public consumption is still considered a misdemeanor, though, with a maximum fine of $500 or 60 days in jail. So, just continue to blaze indoors, rather than being too obvious in the parks or on the streets.
People of DC, light up your joints in solidarity tonight as your city joins the growing list of amazing and forward thinking ones to finally get weed closer to full blown National legalization. Seth Rogen: even though the government may be sadly ignoring your pleas on Alzheimer’s funding and research, apparently they’re hearing you and all the rest of us loud and clear on Marijuana reform laws…
