Oscar Pistorius Pleads Not Guilty to Murder

Oscar Pistorius Murder Trial

Oscar Pistorius was a national hero in South Africa–at least, up until last year when he was charged with the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. A year later, the murder trial for Pistorius began today with him pleading not guilty to the charges. There are many layers to this story that will need to be picked through during this trial but no matter what happens, Pistorius will be scarred for life.

If he is found guilty, he will find himself in jail for the rest of his life probably. If he isn’t, his life as an athlete may have a hard time restarting again. Pistorius qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics despite being a double-amputee and using prosthetic legs. Everything appeared to be going his way before everything that went down on Valentine’s Day 2013.

This is one of the sadder stories in sports history and one that is going to get played out in the court of law over the next couple weeks and on television as the trial is being broadcast live in South Africa. It’s the fall of another national icon because of a crime.
