Jadeveon Clowney thinks that college athletes should get paid. It is a common thought from many top college athletes even they haven’t publicly said it. Clowney said on Thursday that he might have stayed at South Carolina for another year if he was being paid for being a college athlete. The idea seems sound on the surface–but there are still some things that Clowney doesn’t really get about this.
The football program basically pays for all the other sports at a college outside of basketball in most cases. If the football players get paid, why can’t the other athletes get paid as well? Why can’t a great golfer or volleyball player get the same sort of pay that a football player would get? Those questions are going to be brought up if pay happens for college athletes.
It is a very slippery slope that Clowney is on and one that schools and athletes need to come to a common understanding about. It probably won’t be happening anytime soon but it is something that fans better be watching for. Clowney now can go to the NFL and get the money he wanted in college.
