SNL Highlight: Seth Meyers’ Final Weekend Update Joke [VIDEO]

We guess there’s a long tradition of big Saturday Night Live farewells. The whole cast was traded out for the 1980 season, and the last show of the ’70s ended with a big dramatic introduction of the new cast. It wasn’t really the new cast member, though. Just some random folks. At least that had some surreal fun. Now we regularly get big productions when a cast member is leaving. Well, at least the cast members that SNL producer Lorne Michaels appreciates for keeping his franchise viable.

And so we get Seth Meyers’ last Weekend Update last night, as he leaves SNL mid-season to take over the hosting duties on Late Night as Jimmy Fallon moves on to The Tonight Show–which is returning to being taped in New York City, so we’re going to get pretty cluttered with talk shows around the COED offices. Craig Ferguson must be really thrilled to have the L.A. bookings all to himself in the afternoon. Celebs doing Jimmy Kimmel Live have to give up an evening.

Anyway, of course there had to be a big production at the end of Weekend Update. It was fun. Stefon returned as one of the SNL’s best characters from the recent years, and the show managed a nicely quiet gag right at the very end of the big finish. We’ll next see SNL head writer Colin Jost joining Cecily Strong at the Weekend Update desk–and that’ll probably ensure that we won’t get any surprises there for the rest of the season. Enjoy the clip above, though, if only for the final seconds…
