Two titans of rock radio have finally been brought together for an epic musical mashup–meaning someone paired a classic Van Halen song with a classic John Lennon song to create what’s sure to become an equally classic tune.
The trick is to take David Lee Roth’s vocals from the Van Halen hit “Jump” and the piano and drum tracks from John Lennon’s “Imagine.” The result is surprisingly great. The slow, sullen, dulcet sound of Lennon’s piano playing mixed with Roth’s booming voice might sound like two things that could never go together if you used a hot glue gun and an industrial strength press to make them stick. However, they actually create an interesting contrast that’s not overpowering at all by one side or the other.
In fact, they actually complement each other quite well. It’s almost like they both knew that one day, someone without a YouTube account, a noise cancelled audio editor and a lot of time on their hands might try to do a mashup and worked together to made sure that their songs complimented the other musician’s melody.
Of course, the Internet is full of musical mashups that somehow give beloved songs an even better sound. Some of our favorite unlikely pairings includes the lyrics from Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall” with The Bee Gee’s “Stayin’ Alive,”, the beat from Metallica’s “Sad But True: and the lyrics from Steve Wonder’s classic “Superstitious,” and AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” with Ray Parker Jr.’s Ghostbusters theme.
