The gremlins of Gremlins are due for a comeback–but it had to take place in a great new commercial that American’s aren’t seeing. We’re happy to report that someone has finally decided to bring the mischievous little demons out of hiding, but it’s not for the comeback that you’ve been hoping for since Gremlins 2: The New Batch. Instead, they’ve made an appearance in a commercial.
io9 discovered a Snickers commercial made for European televisions that features a cameo appearance by one of the Gremlins. It’s in the same vein as Snickers’ endless series of ads in which some starving grump shows his lack of blood sugar by morphing into the form of a grumpy or crazy celebrity like Joe Pesci, Robin Williams and Betty White.
This one features two friends trying to haul a refrigerator into an apartment when another turns into an angry Gremlin and starts tearing up their friend’s stuff. It’s a nice to see the people who shot the commercial using an actual Gremlin puppet and not cheating with cheap CGI tricks that Hollywood is bound to use when they finally give us another Gremlins movie that will make us realize that getting a wish answered is one of the worst things that can happen in life.
It’s a shame though that American audiences won’t get to enjoy this commercial in between Breaking Bad reruns and NFL playoff games. Why do we get obscure comedy footnote Richard Lewis in our Snickers commercials and Europe gets all the cool pop culture references in their ads? Oh well, the only downside is that they missed a prime opportunity to bring back Sloth from The Goonies.
