Andrew McCutchen’s pay stub was posted online by redditor Grassiii, who claims his friend found the document while on a tour of the visitor’s clubhouse at Wrigley House. [lead image by Rich Schultz/Getty Images]
McCutchen, the 2013 NL MVP, recently signed a six year, $51.5 million contract.
There’s nothing particularly dubious about the photo leak considering that his account and personal information were blacked out, but it does kind of suck to see that Andrew pays more in taxes every two weeks than some people make in a year.
Speaking of taxes, how about the thing called “Jock Tax” which means you get taxed for every game you play in different states. We knew that was a thing, but it’s crazy to see it with your own eyes.
It’s also interesting to see he gets paid every weeks. Pro athletes are humans, guys!
Deadspin, who posted the same photo, also brought up a topic worth discussing. Apparently, MLB players are given $100.50 a day for meals, yet his pay stub only reads $243.75 for 8 or 9 days worth of work. What gives?
Apparently, that MEALS section is directly related to the cafeteria that Andrew must pay for daily. That is the team paying him back. Since his meals a per diem, not income, they aren’t taxed and therefore aren’t included on his pay stub.
Update: we received an email from Aaron, someone who seems to know more about the subject than we do. It is included below:
The $243.75 is added to his gross income for the purposes of calculating his taxes, but then is immediately deducted (Season Meal Money $243.75) before being paid out to him.
