Marilyn was a model, singer, and actress who was named “Sweetheart of the Month” in the first issue of Playboy magazine, which debuted in December 1953. She graced the cover of that issue, which featured her wearing a dress with a neckline cut almost to her navel when she acted as Grand Marshall at the Miss America Parade in September 1952, and while a nude photograph of Monroe, taken in 1949, appeared inside the magazine. She made her first appearance on the cover of Life magazine in April 1952, where she was described as “The Talk of Hollywood”.
She received a Golden Globe nomination for her role in 1956’s “Bus Stop” a BAFTA Award nomination and a David di Donatello award for 1957’s “The Prince and the Showgirl”, and a Golden Globe for her performance in 1959’s “Some Like It Hot”. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked her as the sixth greatest female star of all time.
Even after her untimely passing, Marilyn’s legacy lives on – her likeness has been used to promoted Absolut, Benetton, Chanel No. 5, D&G, Gap, Go Daddy, Levi’s, MasterCard, Mercedes-Benz, Nike, Tampax, Visa, and Volkswagen.
Playboy founder, Hugh Hefner, is so enamored with Marilyn that he’s reserved a crypt next to hers.
