The Naval Medical Center in San Diego has been declared the scene of an active shooting, after the hospital posted a warning on Facebook. NMCSD has advised all personnel to not report to work and avoid the area. It is believed that the scene is at building 26, a tall structure that contains fitness centers, morale and more. Update @ 2:02 PM: Navy Captain said nothing indicates that shots had been fired at NMCSD, but the search continues.
Update @ 12:13 PM: SWAT teams are currently doing room-to-room searches to clear buildings. The Department of Justice, US Marshalls, and Navy are running point.
Update @ 12:05 PM: Out of an abundance of caution, all personnel have been instructed to shelter in place. A spokesman for the base announced that the lockdown went into effect after three shots had been heard. No injuries have been reported.
Update @ 12:04 PM: A reporter with CW6 San Diego on the scene, described there was no “sense of fear” but a “sense of urgency among police on scene.”
Update @ 11:47 AM: No announcements have been made whether or not it’s terror related.
Update @ 11:45 AM: A spokesman for NMCSD has informed CW6 San Diego that the source of the investigation right now is the building’s basement. That spokesman doesn’t know if the basement has been evacuated.
Update @ 11:40 AM: NBC San Diego announced on the broadcast that they had heard over 20 shots were fired, although that hasn’t been confirmed.
At around 8:30 AM, two California Highway Patrol officers were seen entering the facility through an emergency room entrance near Florida Drive. The Naval Medical Center San Diego is one of the top amputee centers for veterans on the West Coast. The Naval Medical Center San Diego employs over 3,000 people. Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD), also known as Bob Wilson Naval Hospital and informally referred to as “Balboa Hospital”, is a technologically advanced Navy medical treatment facility.
The NMCSD area is one of the most heavily militarized area of the world, so the authorities will no doubt handle this situation as quickly as possible.
