"Neighbors" Scores $50 Million Knock-Out Over "Spider-Man 2" [VIDEO]

It’s been a while, but a Frat Movie is once again at the top of the box office. Neighborstook the #1 spot at the weekend box office in a big win over The Amazing Spider-Man 2–which had to settle for second place after just one week as America’s favorite film.
Movie industry analysts are kind of baffled by these results. Universal Studios expected Neighbors to do well, but they didn’t expect the movie would take in over $51 million in its opening weekend. It might have helped that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 had some negative buzz after its first big week. Not all of the reviews were very kind to the comic book movie. For instance, Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers called it “overlong, underwhelming, unnecessary, and sure to be a hot ticket.” Three out of four ain’t bad.
The problem is that the marketing team for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 thought they had a solid hit on their hands that would at least stay at the number one spot for a couple of weeks. At least Sony did not take a big gamble by proclaiming the latest Spider-Man as America’s #1 movie. Maybe they saw something in Neighbors’ tracking numbers, since the studio instead claimed The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as the #1 movie in the world…

At least Sony has some more time to claim that they have “the #1 superhero movie in the world,” or “the world’s top selling movie about spandex-wearing heroes.” Then it’s the X-Men franchise’s turn to shine–and it’ll probably even outdo Neighbors.
