Jake Reiner sat in silence for eight months. Now he’s talking.
The 34-year-old eldest son of director Rob Reiner gave his first on-camera interview since December 2025 – the month both of his parents were found stabbed to death at their home in Brentwood. He described the time since as a “living nightmare,” and it’s easy to understand why.
His younger brother Nick, 32, is currently sitting in custody, facing two counts of first-degree murder. A Los Angeles grand jury handed down the indictment earlier this month, and Nick’s being held without bail at Twin Towers Correctional Facility. No trial date has been set yet, though a pretrial hearing is scheduled for September 15. Prosecutors haven’t said whether they’ll seek the death penalty.
Jake spoke with KABC-TV’s Marc Cota-Robles for the interview, and what he described wasn’t just grief – it was something closer to disorientation.
“Nobody really understands what it’s like to go through something like that until you’re living it. It’s been eight months. It feels like eight years at the same time. And it also feels like eight minutes. Because every moment that I wake up, I’m reminded of my reality.”
That’s not the only contradiction he’s living with. Jake also talked about anger – the kind that doesn’t really fade, just sits there.
“For me, it manifests into anger. It manifests into rage, into how unfair this was, how I didn’t get a say in what happened,” he said. “I didn’t get to stop it from happening. I had no choice in the matter. I just have to accept the reality of it. And to me, that is just one of the most infuriating parts of all of this.”
He learned what happened through a phone call from his sister, Romy. She’d found their father’s body across the street from her own apartment – an image that’s hard to shake, even secondhand.
“Romy told me our dad was dead and then she said, ‘I can’t find Mom,’” Jake recalled. Romy, who’s 28, has since become one of the prosecution’s grand jury witnesses in the case against Nick.
Jake didn’t go into detail about his brother. He didn’t really need to – the way he framed it said enough on its own.
“You know, it’s like I physically lost my parents,” he said. “And then Nick was arrested. And now it’s me and Romy.”
In other words: three siblings became two, in about the same breath that took away two parents.

He spent decades in Hollywood as an actor, writer, director, and producer, and his filmography reads like a list of movies that shaped multiple generations – This Is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally…, Misery, and A Few Good Men among them.
For a filmmaker whose work touched on comedy, horror, and courtroom drama alike, it’s a strange, painful irony that his own family’s story would end up sounding like something out of one of his films – except this one has no script, and no ending yet either.
