Shane Gillis Bud Light Moment at MLS Match Sparks Viral Buzz

Shane Gillis has a Bud Light problem, and it’s playing out on social media right now. Video from Austin FC’s match this past weekend shows the comedian getting handed a can of the beer he’s paid to promote – while sitting right next to a Dos Equis.

Gillis attended Sunday’s match between Austin FC and FC Dallas with Matthew McConaughey, who owns a stake in the club and holds the rather unusual title of “Minister of Culture.” The two were seated in an owner’s box when cameras caught something Bud Light probably wishes they hadn’t.

Here’s the thing: there was already a beer sitting in the cup holder next to Gillis. It just happened to be a Dos Equis – not exactly the brand that’s reportedly paying him serious money to be its spokesperson.

That’s when things got awkward.

A hand reached in from off-camera and swapped in a Bud Light, seemingly the moment producers realized who was on their broadcast. It’s a small moment, but it’s the kind that spreads fast online — especially given Bud Light’s ongoing sensitivity around brand image these past few years.

There’s also a detail getting buried in all the Bud Light chatter: before any of this happened, Gillis can be seen trying to quietly stash a can of nicotine pouches, clearly not expecting to end up on camera at all.

Austin FC ended up losing the derby 2-1 to FC Dallas. Given that Gillis showed up wearing a Philadelphia Eagles hat, though, it’s hard to imagine he was too invested in the result either way.

What’s Next for Gillis

Beer mishaps aside, Gillis has a packed schedule ahead. He’s set to perform stand-up on September 10 at Madison Square Garden, part of the “NYC Still Rising After 25 Years” comedy benefit tied to 9/11 charities.

He’s also stepping into his first major film role later this year. Gillis will appear in Madden, playing alongside Nicolas Cage – who’s taking on the role of John Madden – and Christian Bale, cast as former Raiders owner Al Davis.
