Nobody saw this coming – not even the most bullish box office analysts. Spider-Man: Brand New Day pulled in $360 million domestically over its opening weekend, smashing a record that’s stood for seven years.
That record belonged to Avengers: Endgame, which made $357.1 million when it debuted back in 2019. At the time, that number felt untouchable; it was the biggest domestic opening in box office history, full stop.
Sony and Marvel’s latest web-slinger adventure hit theaters on Friday, July 31. By Sunday night, it had already rewritten the record books.

Think about what Endgame represented when it launched — 21 movies’ worth of buildup, a decade of interconnected storytelling, arguably the most anticipated release in Hollywood history up to that point. That’s the bar Brand New Day just cleared.
And it didn’t just squeak by, either.
The film beat Endgame’s mark by nearly $3 million, which says a lot about where Spider-Man sits in the pop culture landscape right now. Tom Holland’s Peter Parker — introduced all the way back in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War — has quietly become one of the most reliable box office draws working today.
What This Means for 2026’s Box Office
Domestic numbers are only part of the story here. Once international figures roll in, industry estimates put the global opening somewhere between $700-800 million — numbers that could put Brand New Day in position to challenge all-time worldwide records, not just domestic ones.
Add in The Odyssey, which is already closing in on the $1 billion mark globally, and 2026 is starting to look like the strongest year for movie theaters since 2019 — the same year Endgame originally set its record.
For context, here’s where the previous top three domestic openings stood before this weekend:
- Avengers: Endgame – $357.1 million (2019)
- Avengers: Infinity War – $257.7 million (2018)
- The Avengers – $207.4 million (2012)
Marvel isn’t done yet, either. Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on December 18, and given the momentum right now, there’s little reason to think it won’t be another massive event for the studio.
