Bryson DeChambeau automatically qualified for the 2025 USA Ryder Cup Team, but his place on the squad wasn’t without controversy – and it turns out his rocky relationship with teammates started well before anyone teed off at Bethpage Black.
On a recent episode of Barstool Sports’ Fore Play Podcast, host Kevin Kisner – who served as a vice captain for Team USA under captain Keegan Bradley – shared a story that says a lot about how the lead-up to the event actually went.
DeChambeau’s New iPhone Caused Immediate Problems
Bradley had set up a group chat for all the players and captains on the 2025 team. The problem? DeChambeau was the only one without an iPhone, which meant he couldn’t receive video clips the group was sharing. Bradley’s solution was straightforward – he told DeChambeau to go get one, specifically for Ryder Cup communications.
He did. Then things went sideways almost immediately.
“So, he goes and gets a new phone number, shares it with Keegan, starts the group message, everyone starts commenting, nobody hears from Bryson. He had told Keegan the wrong number by one digit. So some random person in America is getting all these comments from the U.S. Ryder Cup team for about 30 minutes. So that was a hilarious start to our Ryder Cup.”
The stranger on the receiving end of Team USA’s group chat apparently took it in stride – responding to say he had no idea what was going on, but wishing them good luck anyway.
It’s almost certainly an honest mistake. But given DeChambeau’s well-documented reluctance to get the phone in the first place, it’s hard not to wonder.
