The Cleveland Browns have released safety Jermaine Whitehead. The release is not a surprise after the third-year player out of Auburn ran to social media immediately after the team’s most recent loss to the Denver Broncos to unleash a Twitter tirade.
During his Twitter rampage, Whitehead threatened fans on multiple occasions and even tossed around racial slurs.
The messages were quickly screenshotted and made the rounds on social media.
Among the messages were “Don’t get shot at lil b*tch. Can you whoop my ass… f*ck football… let me know when you need the address.” He then sent the fan the address to the Browns facility. Whitehead then threatened another fan saying, “Imma kill you b*tch… that’s on blood.”
And finally, responding to a reporter, Whitehead said: “Come get it in blood b*tch made ass lil boy. I’m out there with a broke hand. Don’t get smoked f*ck ass cracker.”
Shortly after Whitehead made his comments, the Browns released a statement addressing the matter.
“Jermaine Whitehead’s social media posts following today’s game were totally unacceptable and highly inappropriate,” the Browns said in a statement after the game. “We immediately spoke with Jermaine upon learning of these comments. The Browns in no way condone that type of language or behavior. This matter will be further addressed internally.”
Then, on Monday morning, less than 24 hours since the 24-19 loss to the Denver Broncos, the Browns announced that they have released the linebacker.
Is anyone really surprised? There are a number of ways to lose your job in the NFL and threatening to kill a fan is certainly near the top of that list.
Up next for the Browns during their disappointing 2-6 season is a meeting with the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, November 10 in Week 10. Kickoff between the two teams at FirstEnergy Stadium is set for 1:00 p.m. ET on CBS.
