It’s National Pi Day, one of the most irrational holidays in the country, where math lovers celebrate the infinite 3.14 number with it’s own special day on March 14. You can celebrate the day by eating your favorite pie — whether it be sweet or savory — or in the case of the Detroit Pistons you can roll out a special jersey for social media.
The Pistons did just that by replacing the “Pi” in “Pistons” with the symbol for “Pi.”
Honestly, the jerseys look pretty great and the Pistons were understandably excited to show them off. They couldn’t anticipate what some of their observant fans were ready to respond with, however.

Of course, the fans had to point out one serious flaw.

The Pistons currently sit in the No. 7 spot in the Eastern Conference and are set to return to action on Friday, March 15 against the Los Angeles Lakers at home. There is no word at this time whether they will identify as the Pistons or Piestons when they take the court.
What Is Pi Day?

This “holiday” is the annual celebration of the constant of the mathematical term pi, and 3, 1, and 4 are the first significant digits. This day is fairly unique to the United States because we use the date format of month, day, and then the year.
The first large-scale celebration of the day was in 1988, which was organized by physicist Larry Shaw at the San Francisco Exploratorium. The U.S. House of Representatives officially recognized March 14th as National Pi Day back in 2009. It’s become such a hit in the academic community that the Massachusetts Institue of Technology has actually taken to mailing their application decision letters to prospective students on Pi Day.
