The Walking Dead … I mean, what the hell, man? I know Seinfeld-style jokes went out of style about 20 years ago, but what’s the deal with The Walking Dead? The show has been on for eight years and has gotten progressively worse each season, all but abandoning legitimate plot progression. While the show had some legitimate dramatic merit in its first couple of seasons, it has since devolved into the following repetitive routine:
In its current form, every season of The Walking Dead boils down to this: bad guys show up to terrorize Rick and his gang, a bunch of walkers inconveniently squad up, people die, Rick & the gang fight back and eventually win. Lather, rinse, repeat.
Which leads me to the question: why the hell are people still watching The Walking Dead? Is it Masochism? The “sunk cost” principle? Sheer curiosity? Hate-watching?
Yes, Carl is finally dead, which represents something of a major plot development given that many fans argue he was Rick’s last connection to the humanity he had before walkers. But the death of Carl epitomized the show’s main problem: people didn’t really care that he died … because they didn’t really care about him. Yes, eight seasons into it’s run and The Walking Dead still does not have characters that have truly endeared themselves to fans outside of Rick and Daryl.
While ratings for The Walking Dead have been steadily slipping over the last couple of years, it still remains one of the most popular shows on cable television despite its lackluster run, meaning we’re still a ways to go from the series finale.
Will I tune into the last ever episode of The Walking Dead? ABSOLUTELY. The final chapter of Rick Grimes and company will assuredly be epic. I just can’t understand why anyone would want to watch until then.
