Olympic medal-winning track and field athlete Germaine Mason died Thursday in a motorcycle crash in outside the capital of his native Jamaica, police in the Caribbean island said.
Germaine Mason Cause of Death
Germaine Mason reportedly lost control of his Honda motorcycle before dawn in St. Andrew Parish, the Jamaica Constabulary Force said in a statement. He was taken to a local hospital but did not survive. He was 34.
A cause for the accident was not immediately disclosed by authorities. According to The Gleaner newspaper in Jamaica, several other athletes, including world famous sprinter Usain Bolt, arrived at the accident scene shortly after the crash, which took place around 4:30 A.M.
Mason was born in Jamaica but represented Britain in the 2008 summer Olympic games in Beijing as his father, David, was born in London. He earned the silver medal in the high jump, equalling his personal best of 2.34m. Only Russia’s Andrey Silnov mark of 2.36m bested Mason’s.
Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness expressed “sincere condolences to the entire sporting fraternity” on Twitter.

British Athletics senior high jump coach Fuzz Caan, who worked closely with Mason at the time of his Olympic success, called him an “outstanding athlete and a truly lovely man.”
“He had a wry sense of humour and was a pleasure to be around. He was a great ambassador of British high jumping. It is an honour for us to have him as part of our sporting history,” he said.
