The New York Yankees have signed long-time St. Louis Cardinals left-fielder Matt Holliday to a one-year, $13 million contract. Fans of the Yankees will see the 37-year-old as their primary designated hitter in 2017.
Holliday just completed a seven-year pact with the Cardinals, begging the question of how much the hulking right-handed hitter has cashed throughout his 13-year career?

2004-2009

Spending the beginning of his career with both the Colorado Rockies and Oakland Athletics, Holliday played under the league minimum salary his first six seasons. The seven-time All-Star started off making $300,000 during his rookie season in 2004 but saw increases every season thereafter. The total jumped from $316,000 to $327,000 then $380,000 and $390,000 before rounding out to $400,000 in 2009.
Holliday was so valuable that after the 2008 season he was traded from Colorado to Oakland in a deal that included Carlos Gonzalez. Before heading to the Bay Area, the then 28-year-old garnered a .320 batting average with 25 home runs and 88 RBI.
While he didn’t replicate the same success in Oakland that he displayed at the career launching pad that is Coors Field, the slugger was traded midseason to St. Louis in 2009. Holliday boasted solid numbers with a .286 batting average and 54 RBI in 93 games.
2010 – 2017

Holliday would slash .293/.380/.494 and smack 295 homers during his six-plus seasons in St. Louis, leaving the Cardinals satisfied with every dollar spent on his deal. During the 2011 campaign, his second full season with the club, he ripped 36 doubles, 22 homers, and drove in 75 runs, which helped to capture the franchise’s 11th World Series Championship.
On a year-to-year basis, Holliday made $17 million per season over the life of his contract, with $2 million of that deferred without interest.

With his contract with New York finalized, Holliday should be pushing close to $140 million in overall worth. After the 2017 MLB season is over, Holliday will have made $159,917,101 in his playing career.
Holliday may not garner Hall of Fame consideration when it’s all over, but he’ll certainly have checked off monetary accolades in comparison to most big leaguers.
