Grand Theft Auto VI hype has officially hit a fever pitch. We’re talking about a marketing rollout that might dwarf anything the gaming industry has thrown at us before.
Rockstar Games dropped an exclusive preview on Netflix earlier today, and it came packaged with a flood of new details about the game. One stat alone should tell you how massive this thing is: the map is set to be three times bigger than the one in Red Dead Redemption 2 — Rockstar’s own 2018 blockbuster.
Rockstar Wanted to Turn Miami Into Real-Life Vice City
Here’s where things get interesting. According to a report from The Miamian, Rockstar submitted a pitch deck to Miami-Dade County officials back on June 29. The proposal? Turning the actual county into a real-world version of Vice City, timed to line up with the game’s November launch.
The Miamian obtained the pitch through a public records request. It lays out plans to convert several county-owned public spaces into full-blown GTA VI branded installations.
Miami International Airport was reportedly on the list. So were PortMiami, Tropical Park, Rickenbacker Beach, and Metrorail and Metromover stations throughout the county.
That’s a lot of real estate for one video game.
At the airport specifically, Rockstar’s plan called for a display aircraft wrapped entirely in Vice City branding. Add in themed baggage carousels, branded luggage carts, and even limited-edition luggage tags — this wasn’t a half-measure. Downtown Miami’s Metromover cars would’ve gotten the same treatment too, wrapped in Vice City’s signature color palette with branded signage popping up at major stations.
PortMiami’s proposal centered around a large-scale mural that would incorporate the port’s actual cargo containers, cranes, and cruise ships into the design. Meanwhile, Tropical Park would host what the pitch called a “family-appropriate” celebration of Miami’s car culture — think lowriders, DJs, and plenty of branded photo installations for people to pose with.
Miami-Dade County spokesperson Carlos Suarez confirmed the pitch exists, though he was careful to note nothing’s set in stone yet.
“Nothing has been formally agreed to or approved, and any idea would have to go through the appropriate review and approval process,” Suarez said. “Given Miami-Dade’s clear influence on the game, we think there could be a unique opportunity to generate revenue for the County while showcasing Miami-Dade to a massive audience.”
Vice City’s Getting a Serious Glow-Up
Vice City isn’t new territory for Grand Theft Auto — the location go all the way back to 2002’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, which was itself loosely based on Miami. But GTA VI is reportedly taking that world-building to a level the series hasn’t attempted before.
Players will apparently be able to jump into all sorts of open-world activities that go way beyond driving and shooting. Mini golf’s in there. So is kayaking, scuba diving, and parachuting. There’s even a fitness system where characters can gain or lose weight depending on their habits over time.
Perhaps most notably, the relationship between lead characters Jason and Lucia isn’t fixed — it can evolve depending on how much attention players put into it throughout the story.
Whether Miami-Dade actually greenlights any of Rockstar’s real-world Vice City takeover remains to be seen. But if even part of this pitch moves forward, GTA VI’s launch might end up feeling less like a video game release and more like a citywide event.
