Amazon MGM Studios just dropped the first trailer for Verity, and Colleen Hoover fans are already losing it online. The film adapts her bestselling psychological thriller of the same name, and it’s bringing some serious star power along with it — Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett all headline.
Hathaway plays Verity Crawford, a wildly successful author who’s left incapacitated after an accident nobody can quite explain. Johnson plays Lowen Ashleigh, a ghostwriter who’s brought in to finish Verity’s book series — and who ends up moving into the Crawford household to do it.
That’s where things get complicated.
Hartnett plays Jeremy Crawford, Verity’s husband. He and Lowen start something during her stay at the estate, which, given the source material, probably won’t end well for anyone involved.

A manuscript that doubles as a confession
While she’s staying at the remote Crawford estate, Lowen stumbles onto something she wasn’t supposed to find — an autobiographical manuscript written by Verity herself. It reads less like fiction and more like a diary, and the deeper Lowen gets into it, the more it starts to look like a confession to something genuinely disturbing. Where the line between the book and reality actually sits is the whole hook of the story.
This isn’t Hollywood’s first trip through Hoover’s catalog, and it won’t be the last at this rate. Verity is the fourth of her novels to make it to theaters, joining It Ends With Us (the one tangled up in the very public Blake Lively–Justin Baldoni lawsuit), Regretting You, and Reminders of Him.
Those three films alone have pulled in a combined $529 million at the global box office — numbers that make it pretty clear why studios keep circling back to her books.
For Hathaway, this is just one stop on an unusually packed year. She’s also got Mother Mary, The Devil Wears Prada 2, The Odyssey and The End of Oak Street either out or on the way in 2026 — five films total, which is a lot even by A-list standards.
Verity hits theaters on October 2, 2026. Michael Showalter — known for The Big Sick, The Eyes of Tammy Faye and The Idea of You — directs. Rounding out the cast are Ismael Cruz Córdova, Irina Dvorovenko, Brady Wagner, K.K. Moggie and Michael Abbott Jr., along with a cameo from podcaster Alex Cooper playing, well, herself.
