Nick Reiner just got hit with jail discipline again. The son of filmmaker Rob Reiner — who’s charged with murdering both of his parents — reportedly turned “extremely hostile” during a shower-time incident, according to a new report from People. He’s currently facing two counts of first-degree murder.
Sources say the confrontation happened while guards were escorting Reiner from the shower back to his cell.
What happened in the shower block
Reiner, 32, is being held alone right now. He’s in a specialized medical observation unit with heightened security, tucked inside Tower 1 of the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles.
The incident itself went down around 8:15 a.m. on April 27. Reiner had already finished showering and changed into fresh county-issued clothes — but deputies got delayed. They were busy responding to another inmate’s apparent overdose elsewhere in the facility.
That’s when things escalated.
According to People, Reiner started “screaming, using profane language and directing hostile remarks at both a sheriff and a sergeant” over the delay. A source close to the situation didn’t hold back describing it: “He was recalcitrant, extremely hostile, creating a verbal disturbance, refusing to follow rules and not listening to any commands.” The source added that “he was yelling, screaming, being disrespectful and shouting many profanities.”
The confrontation never turned physical — but it was enough to call in backup. Roughly three additional guards responded to the scene.
Reiner ended up with a formal write-up. He also lost phone calls, visitation rights, and commissary access for five days as a result.
A mental state that’s “continued to deteriorate”
Despite the outburst, one source described it as an “outlier” and said Reiner has “largely adjusted” to life behind bars overall. That said, his mental health is a different story.
Reiner had reportedly been receiving treatment for schizophrenia before the killings. Sources say that treatment picture — and his condition overall — has gotten worse since he’s been locked up.
“Lately, he’s not been doing very well. He’s been struggling inside jail,” a source told People.
The isolation hasn’t helped. Reiner has spent roughly seven months in near-total isolation — eating all three meals alone, watched by 24-hour camera surveillance, with welfare checks every 15 minutes. Until July 27, he hadn’t had a single personal visitor outside of his attorneys.
The case against him
Reiner was arrested back in December 2025 following the stabbing deaths of his parents — director Rob Reiner and producer-photographer Michele Singer Reiner — at their home in Brentwood.
Rob Reiner’s filmography speaks for itself. He directed This Is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally…, Misery, and A Few Good Men. His stretch from Stand by Me in 1986 through A Few Good Men in 1992 is often called one of the best consecutive runs any director has ever had.
In February, Reiner pleaded not guilty to both counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances attached. If he’s convicted, he could face life without parole — or the death penalty.
He’s waived his right to a speedy trial. Reiner is due back in court on September 15 for a preliminary hearing, where prosecutors will lay out their evidence and a judge will decide whether there’s enough to send the case to trial.
