Kylian Mbappe isn’t one to stay quiet when he’s attacked, and this time he had every right to speak up. The French forward fired back at Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla after she posted racist remarks about him following France’s win over Paraguay in the World Cup round of 16.
France squeezed past Paraguay 1-0, with Mbappe scoring the game’s only goal on a penalty kick in the 70th minute. The match itself got chippy – Paraguay drew plenty of criticism for how physical they played throughout the 90 minutes.
That’s when things turned ugly off the field.
Amarilla’s Comments Spark Outrage
Amarilla, 61, took to X shortly after the final whistle and posted comments about Mbappe that shocked people across social media. She didn’t hold back, and neither did the backlash that followed.
“This brute hasn’t even learned to write; instead of mother’s milk, he sucked on coconuts, and the most educated thing he heard were chimpanzees,” she wrote.
She kept going from there, calling Mbappe “a colonized Cameroonian pretending to be French.” Then came this line: “The only thing many of us blame Albirroja (the nickname for Paraguay’s national team) for is not giving him a slap in the face at the end of the match.”
It didn’t take long for the football world to respond.
Mbappe And The French Federation Respond
The French Football Federation (FFF) didn’t waste time condemning Amarilla’s remarks. They released a statement on X calling the comments “abhorrent and unacceptable,” and they’re not just letting it slide as internet noise.
“These remarks are criminal and reprehensible. They must be prosecuted here as elsewhere. The FFF is filing a report with the prosecutor’s office for the purpose of judicial action,” the federation wrote.
Mbappe, meanwhile, made clear that Amarilla doesn’t speak for an entire nation. He posted his own response in French, calling her comments “despicable” and separating her views from the passion Paraguay’s players and fans showed throughout the tournament.
Madame Celeste Amarilla,
He continued, pointing out how one person’s hatred shouldn’t overshadow what an entire team accomplished. “Through your recklessness and your brazen racism, the entire world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort that your players accomplished during this World Cup, making way for an incompetent woman who gives the worst possible image of her country,” Mbappe wrote. “I will never allow people like her the freedom to spread their hatred and racism across the world.”
As of now, Amarilla hasn’t responded to Mbappe directly. That silence hasn’t stopped the support from pouring in, though – French fans, Paraguayans, and people from all corners of the globe have rallied behind Mbappe since his statement went up.
