Softball pitchers regularly throw eye-popping pitch counts that would never fly in baseball. The underhand motion just doesn’t put the same stress on the arm.
But Baylor’s Cambree Creager pushed things into completely uncharted territory on Thursday.
The sophomore righty threw a program-record 250 pitches across 15 innings against Houston. And here’s the kicker – the Bears lost 3-2, with Creager taking the loss after pitching every single inning.

Creager Obliterates Previous Baylor Mark
The previous program record stood at 185 pitches. Creager blew past that by 65.
In a fair world, she’d get to line up her teammates and whack each one with a giant mallet, Gallagher-style.
What’s wild is that Creager didn’t even come close to the NCAA record. That still belongs to Creighton’s Kelly Brookhart, who threw 390 pitches in a win over Utah back in 1991. Her opponent that day, Janet Womack, tossed 320 pitches in the same game.
Creager’s total does set the modern era record under current NCAA rules, though.
Over those 15 innings, she gave up 10 hits and five walks while striking out seven. The Bears offense didn’t do her many favors – they left 17 runners on base, including two in the bottom of the 15th.
“We didn’t really want to go that long with her because we haven’t seen her do that,” Baylor coach Glenn Moore told reporters after the game. “She certainly broke some barriers down in her own mind and proved to us that down the road, if we need that, she can put up a Whitney Canion/Cristen Vitek performance. You don’t see this type of performance from pitchers anymore at all.”
Moore added that anything over 100 pitches is taxing on the arm. “But she wanted to ball, and when you have a kid that’s not hurting and wants the ball, I don’t think you take it away from them.”
Fair enough. But the least Baylor could’ve done is find a way to actually win the game for her.
