Academy Award-nominated actress Scarlett Johansson is in talks to join Robert Pattinson in The Batman: Part II. The highly anticipated sequel is scheduled to begin production next year, with fans already speculating about Johansson’s potential role.
While Warner Bros. hasn’t officially confirmed which character Johansson will portray, industry insiders suggest she’s being considered for a love interest who eventually becomes a villain. This has fueled speculation that she’ll play Andrea Beaumont/Phantasm from the 1993 animated film Batman: Mask of the Phantasm – a character who’s never appeared in live-action Batman films before.
The casting news comes alongside reports that Zoë Kravitz won’t be returning as Selina Kyle/Catwoman for the sequel.
Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell are all expected to reprise their roles as Jim Gordon, Alfred Pennyworth, and The Penguin, respectively – maintaining some continuity with Matt Reeves’ first Batman installment.
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm holds a special place in Batman lore.
Many Batman enthusiasts consider the animated feature to be among the finest Batman films ever made, regardless of format. Its potential influence on the upcoming sequel has generated significant excitement among the fanbase.
Sources say the actress is in final negotiations to join The Batman Part II, the long-gestating sequel to Matt Reeves’ 2021 hit. If the deal comes together, it’d be a jolt for the project which aims to go before cameras next year. She will first film The Exorcist, to which she signed on last week, before moving on to Batman.
Johansson brings significant star power to the project. As The Hollywood Reporter notes: “Johansson is one of the more bankable stars in the world, with her work as Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff in the MCU just part of her hits, which also include July’s Jurassic World: Rebirth. She also recently released her directorial debut, the low-key drama Eleanor the Great, starring June Squibb.”

Before donning what many presume will be the Phantasm’s iconic mask, Johansson will complete work on Mike Flanagan’s remake of The Exorcist. This scheduling arrangement allows her to fulfill both commitments before The Batman: Part II hits theaters on October 1, 2027 – more than five-and-a-half years after the first film’s release.
The substantial gap between installments has been a point of frustration for fans who embraced Pattinson’s darker, detective-focused take on the Caped Crusader.
