The Brooklyn Nets front office has apparently reached its limit with Michael Porter Jr.’s podcast appearances, as the forward recently disclosed that team management has asked him to “steer clear of certain topics.”
Porter Jr., 27, has built quite the reputation for controversial statements across various podcast platforms – both on his own show and as a guest on others hosted by athletes and social media personalities.
His own “Curious Mike” podcast has featured particularly eyebrow-raising content. He’s referred to women as a “vice” and admitted to using Andrew Tate clips as a way to “test” potential dating partners.
During an appearance on Justin Laboy’s podcast, Porter Jr. shared how he required his ex-girlfriend to split rent payments despite his multi-million dollar NBA contract – adding that she could continue the arrangement only if she “acted right.” His podcast history also includes comments about his brother Jontay’s lifetime gambling ban, COVID conspiracy theories, and anti-vaccination views.
The team’s patience has run out.
Speaking this week on the Ball in the Family podcast – just one of seemingly countless athlete-hosted shows – Porter Jr. revealed that the Nets have essentially told him to tone down his controversial takes.
“To be on the internet for anything else other than basketball, I feel like that’s a summertime thing,” Porter Jr. explained. “Even the organization, we just had conversations that they would appreciate it if I steered clear of certain topics.”
He specifically mentioned his controversial WNBA comments as an example of sensitive areas he’s now trying to avoid. “That’s why the WNBA thing is just a topic that’s kind of sensitive nowadays. I try to be just aware of that,” he said, referencing his previous claim that his 8th-9th grade self and Lonzo Ball would “go crazy” competing in the women’s professional league.
Michael Porter Jr. says the Brooklyn Nets front office has advised him to “steer clear” of certain topics during podcast appearances: “For the most part I’m chilling, I’m not trying to say nothing crazy no more.”
