First Teaser For Toy Story 5 Introduces Admittedly Ingenious Villain

Pixar has unveiled the first trailer for Toy Story 5, positioning a children’s tablet as the villain in the beloved animated franchise. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on June 19, 2026.

The teaser introduces actress Greta Lee (known for “Past Lives,” “The Morning Show,” and the upcoming “Tron: Ares”) as the voice of LilyPad – a frog-shaped smart tablet that threatens our favorite toys’ very existence.

With its tagline “The age of toys is over…?” the film clearly takes aim at the growing phenomenon of tech-dependent children.

“iPad kids” has emerged as a term describing Generation Alpha children who show signs of screen addiction and resulting behavioral issues.

According to the official synopsis from Pixar, LilyPad makes life “exponentially harder” for Buzz, Woody, Jessie and their friends as they face this “all-new threat to playtime.” The tablet’s high-tech appeal puts traditional toys at risk of becoming obsolete – creating the central conflict of the film.

Tom Hanks will reprise his role as the loyal cowboy Woody, while Tim Allen returns as space ranger Buzz Lightyear. Joan Cusack is also back voicing the enthusiastic cowgirl Jessie. In a surprising casting announcement, comedian Conan O’Brien joins the franchise as “Smarty Pants” – a toilet training tech toy.

Return of an Iconic Franchise

This marks the first Toy Story film since 2019’s Toy Story 4, which explored Woody’s decision to leave his child owner for a life of freedom with Bo Peep. The original Toy Story (1995) was Pixar’s first feature film and revolutionized computer animation with its groundbreaking technology and storytelling.

The franchise has consistently addressed relevant childhood themes throughout its nearly three-decade run. Toy Story 5’s focus on screen time and digital devices reflects current parental concerns about technology’s impact on play and development.

While previous films dealt with themes of abandonment, growing up, and finding purpose, this latest installment appears to tackle the existential threat that modern technology poses to traditional toys – and perhaps childhood itself.
