Top Gun: Maverick and F1 director Joseph Kosinski’s Miami Vice remake is targeting two of Hollywood’s hottest stars, with reports suggesting Glen Powell and Michael B. Jordan are being courted to lead the anticipated reboot.
Both Powell and Jordan have established themselves as Hollywood’s rising A-listers in recent years. Their star power has significantly increased following Powell’s turn in this summer’s blockbuster Twisters and Jordan’s performance in the critically acclaimed Sinners.
Kosinski has cemented his position as one of the industry’s premier directors after delivering the billion-dollar hit Top Gun: Maverick and this year’s Formula 1 drama starring Brad Pitt.
Miami Vice Legacy
The original Miami Vice – created by Anthony Yerkovich with Michael Mann producing – first hit NBC screens on September 16, 1984, running for five seasons until June 1989. The show featured Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as undercover detectives battling South Florida’s drug trade and organized crime.
Mann later directed a 2006 film adaptation starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell. While initially receiving mixed reviews, the film has since developed a dedicated cult following.
This next chapter looks promising.
According to Nexus Point News, Powell and Jordan are “in talks” to portray James “Sonny” Crockett and Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs respectively in Kosinski’s update. The film currently has a tentative release date of August 2027.
The screenplay comes from Dan Gilroy – the writer-director behind the Oscar-nominated Nightcrawler who recently won an Emmy for his work on Andor. Gilroy’s impressive writing credits include Real Steel, The Bourne Legacy, and Kong: Skull Island, among others.
Kosinski’s directorial portfolio extends beyond his recent successes with Top Gun: Maverick and F1. He’s previously helmed Tron: Legacy, Oblivion, and the critically respected firefighter drama Only The Brave. His Netflix thriller Spiderhead – while less commercially successful – demonstrated his range across genres.
The pairing of these rising stars with Kosinski’s visual style could potentially reinvigorate the Miami Vice franchise for a new generation – though it remains to be seen if the production can capture the neon-soaked aesthetic and cultural impact of the original series.
