Sydney Sweeney made a notable appearance at this month’s Emmy Awards, presenting alongside Hollywood’s elite. But behind the scenes, the “Anyone But You” actress reportedly faced a chilly reception due to recent controversies.
The tension stems from an American Eagle campaign earlier this year that unexpectedly became political fodder – reaching all the way to former President Trump’s social media accounts.
“Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the ‘HOTTEST’ ad out there. It’s for American Eagle, and the jeans are ‘flying off the shelves.’ Go get ’em Sydney!” Trump wrote in early August, thrusting the actress into the political spotlight.
Emmy Awards Reception
According to The Sun, sources close to the situation claim Sweeney felt distinctly uncomfortable at the ceremony. Her political associations – combined with rumors about a professional relationship with controversial music executive Scooter Braun – reportedly created an awkward atmosphere.
“She felt like the whole of the Emmys was very woke, and it was awkward for her,” an insider told the UK publication. “She’s made no secret about where she stands politically, but she’s not going to shout it from the rooftops.”
The source added that despite being selected as a presenter, Sweeney appeared “out of place and looking a little lost” backstage.
The actress wasn’t receiving her usual warm welcome.
“She certainly wasn’t the most popular girl there, like she’s used to,” the source continued. “There are whispers that some of her peers are taking a step back from their friendships with her – there’s just too much controversy around her at such a politically tense time.”
The “Euphoria” star hasn’t publicly addressed these reports. Industry analysts note that celebrity political affiliations have become increasingly scrutinized in today’s polarized climate – putting performers in challenging positions regardless of their views.
Sweeney’s career continues moving forward despite the alleged tension. She’s set to star in the sports biopic “Christy” about women’s boxing legend Christy Martin. This role represents a significant departure from her previous work, requiring extensive physical training and transformation.
Following that, she’ll appear alongside Amanda Seyfried in the psychological thriller “The Housemaid” this December. The film – which explores class dynamics and psychological manipulation – has already generated early buzz for both actresses’ performances.
