When we think of pop culture, our minds tend to jump straight to entertainment. This makes a lot of sense as, on a base level, this is where we most visibly engage. We exist within a cultural sphere of new and exciting things, experiencing these things in a palatable way keeps us busy and amused. Looking beneath the surface, however, we can find real advantages to pop culture that have an appreciable effect on connecting us, far beyond the bounds of the entertainment products themselves.
Approachable Pop Culture
We rely on mental shortcuts to efficiently understand the world, as Very Well Mind explores. Through this lens, we attempt to simplify our mental stacks to reduce effort. Through using these means we can avoid exhaustion, but these tricks can come at a cost. To oversimplify, we can alienate ourselves from new experiences, which can have negative repercussions.

Pop culture, by being approachable to a wide range of people, walks a path of broad accessibility without encouraging a divide. When developed in a certain way, pop culture can serve as both a sounding board and mirror, allowing discussion about who we are, where we came from, and what connects us to others. Of course, the ability of pop culture to have this effect depends highly on the project, with some being far better than others at driving togetherness.
Avenues of Expression
One of the biggest means pop culture has of reaching an audience is through music. Music, by reaching into a primal part of us, is not bound by the geographical and cultural barriers that can separate us. It’s common for music to reach the other side of the world, profoundly affecting and opening the eyes of those well outside of the musician’s usual sphere and encourages communities to form.
While this concept has applied ever since the possibility of international media, it’s also worth noting that, to reach an evolving audience, the media itself has to grow. A strong example of this could be found in online slot games like King Kong Cash. Originally starting in offline establishments, these casino games, like slots and bingo, use promotions like daily free spins to help players discover new games and a wide range of games to appeal to all customers, as they revolve around building an active and welcoming community to all players.
This raises another key idea, that the internet is responsible for a lot of what makes modern pop culture great.

Before the internet, we often lacked the context to understand international pop culture. While it was still possible to enjoy the products of other nations, in the modern online environment, our interconnectivity serves as a guiding light to better appreciate the depth of what pop culture offers.
As people of the 2020s, we find ourselves in what is undoubtedly the most connected pop culture era yet. No matter what your interest, we have an entire world of art to draw from, and an entire world of people to connect to. We can only hope that these opportunities manifest as a more accepting future, where we can all share in what we enjoy most.
