Patricia Ann Anton, an American citizen who was an elementary school teacher in Michigan and had been living and teaching in the Dominican Republic, was found killed inside of her home on Tuesday, November 12. According to reports, the 63-year-old was found bound, gagged, and strangled to death inside of her home after an apparent robbery.
Anton, originally born in Italy, had been living in the Dominican Republic for 15 years and worked at the Mariposas Montessori private school.
There were no signs of forced entry which has led authorities to believe that Anton may have known her killers. However, no suspects have been identified at this time. Anton’s cellphone, laptop, and plasma television were missing from her home when her body was found, according to local newspaper Lopez Doriga.
“Patty was one of those teachers whom our daughter would run to hug, and who would always treat the kids as her own,” one man wrote in Dominican Today. “To find out that her life was senselessly cut short in such a cruel manner brings such pain and sadness.”

Another woman added: “Our family is heartbroken by the loss of Patty. She was an amazing mother, teacher and friend – a role model to so many. She loved the DR – both the place and the people. She had a heart of gold and would help anyone – but was also a seasoned savvy traveler who could hold her own and was always aware of her surroundings. I cannot imagine how this happened or what kind of monster could be so merciless to take her life in such a cruel way. Senseless. Heart breaking.”
