Ohio State football star Chase Young continues to have the uncertainty of a suspension looming over his head. The potential No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft took out a loan from a “family friend” to help pay his girlfriend’s way to the Rose Bowl last season, before repaying the loan in full.
However, the NCAA has yet to make an official ruling on his eligibility and some believe he may never step onto the field in a Buckeyes uniform again.
But how did the entire situation surrounding the loan come to light?
According to Bill Greene on 247Sports’ Bucknuts podcast, some close to the Ohio State program are “suspicious” of the Maryland staff. Young is from the Washington, D.C. area and his high school football coach at DeMatha Catholic High School is a current member of the Terrapins’ coaching staff.
Greene said:
“The people I’m talking to are kind of very suspicious of the Maryland staff. Chase Young’s high school coach (Elijah Brooks) is actually on the staff at Maryland. I’m not an investigative reporter. I’m just saying the people I talk to, they are looking really closely at Chase’s high school coach and what hand he may have played in this. I think that’s almost where the drama is right now. Obviously, you want him back for Penn State and Michigan, though.”
It will be interesting to see if anything comes from the suspicion, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if a college program pulled out a slimy move to prevent their opponent’s star player from taking the field. But despite what may have been their best efforts, Maryland was routed 73-14.
