Let’s face it: no matter what they tell you, college is not the time to find your future husband. This expectation may have been feasible 10 years ago, but now, college is more competitive than ever. Who really has time to invest in serious relationships that will more than likely fail?
That’s not to say you have to completely ignore your love life and bury yourself in your studies for the four years of undergrad. All we are saying is, there’s no need to take romance so seriously as a college student.
The hookup culture gets an unnecessarily bad rap. We spend hours in class and at the library working towards our degree, we deserve to have a little fun in our rare moments of down time without having to make a romantic commitment.
Truthfully, dating someone is a lot more time and energy than it’s worth. That’s adding a whole new element to your schedule that is sure to add useless stress into your routine. If you can hardly find time to sleep, you don’t need to make time for dinner and movie dates.
If you’re going to be a college student, you might as well embrace it head on. Dating apps are full of stereotypes and stigmas, but they’re an easy access to the hookup scene. Even though less than 5% of profiles say they’re looking for hookups, most people with Tinder, Hinge, or Bumble profiles in your college town are probably on the same page as you – it just might seem creepy to outwardly admit it.
This is the last stage in your life when it’s socially acceptable to make dumb decisions (yes, we said it). After graduation, you have to be a mature adult and settle down, so you might as well make the most of this carefree time while you’ve got it.
And if the hookup culture isn’t for you, that’s totally fine too! College should be a time free of judgement with no pressures to fulfill any stereotypes beyond academics. It’s okay to steer clear of this world as long as you aren’t judging those in it.
At the end of the day, despite what everyone tries to tell you, relationships are overrated. Download that dating app you’ve been thinking about and go on with your college life.
