A video shot at the Outer Banks in North Carolina has gone viral after a series of lights randomly appeared above the water. The video was first posted to the YouTube account of a user by the name William Guy. In the video, there were clear skies over the water before a series of 14 lights showed up in a cluster.
“Look, nothing in the sky at all, then all of a sudden…” the man can be heard saying in the video, as transcribed by Fox 10 Phoenix. “Anybody tell me what that is? We’re in the middle of the ocean, on a ferry, nothing around. Look. Nothing around. No land, no nothing.”

While there were questions about where the lights could have possibly come from, one person commented on the video saying they believe they know the source of the random lighting. The user, Derrick Chennault, identified himself as a former Marine based at the 2nd Marine Air Wing in Cherry Point, North Carolina which is nearly 125 miles west of the Outer Banks.
“I am pretty sure I know what those lights are,” Chennault wrote, via the New York Post. “We used to regularly drop flares out of the back of our plane in the evenings for military exercises in that area. They are one million candle power each so they were pretty bright and can be seen from far away and floated down slow as they hung from a parachute.”
There is one hole in Chennault’s theory, however. According to a spokesman from the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base which is less than 100 miles from Cherry Point, there was no aircraft in the area of where the video was filmed at the Outer Banks on that day.
At the time of this posting, the video has received more than 371,600 views, so let the speculation and conspiracy theories continue.
