Washington Redskins End Jay Gruden’s Misery, Announce Firing After Week 5 Loss

The Washington Redskins are off to a miserable 0-5 start and that has led to a major change. Early Monday, October 7, following a 33-7 loss to the New England Patriots, ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen reported that Washington has fired head coach Jay Gruden.

The team confirmed the news with a brief statement.

“Through the first five games of the 2019 season, the team has clearly not performed up to expectations, and we all share in that responsibility,” the franchise’s statement read, via the NFL Network. “Moving forward we are committed to doing all that we can collectively as an organization to turn things around and give our Redskins fans and alumni a team they can be proud of in 2019 and beyond.”

With Gruden on the outs, Washington has named assistant head coach/offensive line coach Bill Callahan as interim head coach.

During his time as head coach, the 52-year-old coach has put together a 35-49-1 overall record.

The relationship between Gruden and Washington has been souring for months, with tensions reaching a new level after the franchise decided to draft former Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins, despite the signal-caller not being Gruden’s preferred pick.

Gruden also hinted at the uncertainty of his future with the team following Sunday’s Week 5 loss to New England.

“Nobody’s told me anything,” Gruden told the media. “If the key works on Monday, I’ll keep working.”

Washington will be looking to pick up their first win of the 2019-20 season on Sunday, October 13 against the winless Miami Dolphins. If there was ever a time to pick up a win, it is against the Dolphins who are struggling just as much as Washington throughout the first month of the season.
