Donald Trump is not backing down. On Thursday, October 3, amid an impeachment inquiry regarding a private phone call with the president of Ukraine, the President of the United States appeared on the South Lawn of the White House when he made public comments that has raised some red flags.
Trump was speaking with reporters when he publicly said that both Ukraine and China should open investigations into Democratic front-runner Joe Biden and his family.
“Well, I would think that if they were honest about it, they would start a major investigation into the Bidens,” Trump said about what he would like Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to do. “And, by the way, likewise, China should start an investigation into the Bidens, because what happened in China is just about as bad as what happened with Ukraine.”
The comments have drawn a comparison to Trump’s comments on the 2016 campaign trail when he said “Russia, if you are listening…” in regards to looking into Hillary Clinton’s emails.
Considering a private phone call with Ukraine asking for an investigation into Biden sparked an impeachment inquiry, it will be interesting to see what House Democrats do now that the president has publicly asked two foreign nations to investigate a domestic political rival.
Trump is set to meet with China next week for the latest round of trade talks.
“We’re going to have a meeting with them, we’ll see,” Trump added. “I have a lot of options on China. But if they don’t do what we want, we have tremendous power.”
Trump’s call to China to investigate the Bidens stems from a business deal Hunter Biden made that involved the Chinese government-owned Bank of China. Whether he brings up Biden during the meeting remains to be seen.
What we do know, however, is that Trump is showing no signs of slowing down his attacks on the Democratic front-runner and former Vice President.
