Billie Eilish is one of the breakout stars of 2019. The 17-year-old dropped her debut studio album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, this year and has never looked back. The album featured five top 40 singles including the No. 1 hit “Bad Guy.”
Because of the success, Eilish is the first artist born in the 2000s and the youngest artist since Lorde (“Royals”) to have a number-one single.
But there was some concern for Eilish, because she wasn’t even sure that anyone would like her top single.
During an appearance on The Howard Stern Show, Eilish revealed some of the insecurities she had about “Bad Guy” and her other single “When the Party’s Over.” The reception was beyond her wildest dreams.
“I don’t know what people want anymore,” she said. “Because I thought that everyone would hate ‘Bad Guy’ and that everyone would hate ‘When the Party’s Over.’ I don’t know what to expect now.”
It just goes to show that you can never predict the trends in the music industry.
Eilish also discussed getting a taste of success at such an early age and admitted that she is grateful for the way things worked out, mainly because it allowed her to avoid any chance of screwing up as a kid and becoming a victim of cancel culture.
“There’s a part of me that feels I did miss being a teenager, like I didn’t get to be a [normal] teenager,” she said, as transcribed by Complex. “I get more and more grateful for it happening that young because I feel like, if it had happened later, people would be able to dig up dirt from when I was that age. If this hadn’t happened at that age, I would have been doing some reckless shit.”
And it’s a good thing that Eilish is enjoying her time in the spotlight, because she is riding a wave of popularity that doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon.
