Brian Mulkeen, a 33-year-old NYPD officer, gave the ultimate sacrifice while protecting his city early Sunday, September 29. Mulkeen was on duty in the Bronx when he was shot and killed during a suspect. According to ABC, Mulkeen was struck three times before being rushed to the hospital where he ultimately died.
“As cops we know how rewarding our profession can be. But I’ll tell you: There is absolutely no worse moment on our job than this. As we stand here this morning, a young man with a bright future who courageously patrolled some of New York City’s toughest streets has tragically lost his life,” Chief of Department Terence Monahan said at a press conference at Jacobi Medical Center shortly after the shooting.
Mulkeen was a six-year veteran of the New York Police Department.
After three officers approached a suspect, he attempted to flee the scene while officers pursued. Mulkeen and his partner engaged in a violent struggle with the suspect who ultimately reached for his gun. Police are not sure whether it was the suspect or Mulkeen’s firearm that discharged.
“Officer Mulkeen’s gun fired five times,” Monahan said. “At this point, it is not clear who fired Officer Mulkeen’s gun.”
Police returned fire at the suspect, who was killed at the scene.
Bodycam footage shows that Mulkeen was repeatedly shouting that the suspect was “reaching for [his weapon].”
The name of the suspect was not released, but police did state he was a 27-year-old man on probation for a narcotics-related arrest.
