FSU football fans have been less than happy with the team’s performance under head coach Willie Taggart. That led to one four-year-old Seminoles fan using a savvy, entrepreneurial approach to do his part in helping Florida State get out from under Taggart’s enormous contract.
Taggart signed a six-year, $30 million contract with Florida State and the school would owe him 80 percent of his remaining salary balance if he is fired. Considering the program is just 1-2 on the season and 6-9 overall under Taggart, the Florida State faithful are looking at all of their options.
One of those options is checking out four-year-old Grayton Grant’s “Free Willie” lemonade stand.
Grayton was selling $20 per cup of lemonade outside of his grandmother’s home in Tallahassee. At the end of the day, $241 were raised in under three hours. Grayton’s father Daniel Grant, a Florida State graduate and booster, matched the donation and cut a $482 check to Seminole Boosters, Inc.
“I am tired of losing football games and being made fun of at school for being a Seminole fan. At four, I am already starting to gravitate towards the color orange. You don’t want that for an innocent kid like me,” a letter addressed to the boosters that was signed by Grayton read. “I hope this helps other Noles fan (sic) have hope that we can once again have a football team and program to be proud of!”
Simply brilliant.
We’ll have to see whether this lights a fire under the ass of the Florida State football team and Willie Taggart or whether they will put together another uninspiring effort and blow another lead.
Up next for the Seminoles is a meeting with the Louisville Cardinals on Saturday, September 21 at home before closing off the month with another home game on Saturday, September 28 against the visiting North Carolina State Wolfpack. Things will only get tougher for Florida State in October, as they kickoff the month against top-ranked Clemson.
