Fred McLeod, the voice of the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers, has passed away at age 67. On Tuesday, September 10, the news was announced by the franchise that McLeod had passed away on Monday evening.
McLeod, who spent 22 seasons announcing Detroit Pistons games, joined the Cavaliers in 2006 where he celebrated his 36th season of broadcasting games.
“It is with the most extreme sadness that the Cleveland Cavaliers share that Cavs and Fox Sports Ohio play-by-play announcer Fred McLeod died suddenly Monday evening,” the statement read.
“The entire Cavaliers organization mourns the loss of their great friend and teammate. Fred’s deep love for Cleveland and the Cavaliers was clearly evident in everything he did in and around the community and on-air during his more than 1,000 Cavalier game broadcasts. He was a true, heart-felt ambassador for the team, fans and entire greater Cleveland community.”

An official cause of death for McLeod has not been announced at this time. The longtime announce, described as “one of the most accomplished and respected announcers in the NBA”, is survived by his wife Beth, morther Marilyn, sister Lynn, and his three children: Sean, Jenna, and Molly.
Through his career, McLeod — who began his broadcasting career in 1974 as a sportscaster for KQTV in St. Joseph, Missouri — has won three Lower Great Lakes Emmy Awards for his work with FOX Sports Ohio in 2014, 2017, and 2018. McLeod, who is from Strongsville, Ohio, covered the Cleveland Indians, Oakland Athletics, and Detroit Pistons before returning home to cover the Cavaliers.
