Matthew McConaughey is Now a University of Texas Professor

Matthew McConaughey, a University of Texas at Austin alum, is now Professor McConaughey. The 49-year-old actor has been named a professor of practice at the Moody College of Communication Department of Radio-Television-Film. The school announced the news this week.

McConaughey will be teaching the class “Advanced Producing: Script to Screen.”

You can guarantee there will be plenty of students wishing to land a spot in McConaughey’s classroom.

“It’s the class I wish I would have had when I was in film school. Working in the classroom with these students gives me a chance to prepare them,” McConaughey, who was previously a visiting instructor at the school, said in a statement through UT Austin. “Making movies, turning words on paper into film, is both a science and art – no matter the time or generation. The elements of truth and genuine joy for the process are timeless. That will always be our classroom focus.”

McConaughey earned a film degree in 1993 from the University of Texas at Austin.

“We are proud to welcome Professor McConaughey to officially join our world-class faculty,” said Moody College Dean Jay Bernhardt. “Matthew cares deeply for our school and our students, and we are thrilled that he shares his time and talent to help prepare the next generation of media leaders and innovators.”

McConaughy previously served as a visiting instructor where he was co-teaching the Script to Screen film production class. The release states McConaughy “developed the course’s curriculum, which provides a unique, behind-the-scenes view of each stage of a film’s production.” During the Fall 2019 semester, students will be studying “The Gentlemen” and “Mud.” In the spring, the students studied “The Beach Bum” and “The Gentleman.”

McConaughey has worked in more than 50 films, and has won 37 awards for his roles. McConaughey is in the Texas Film Hall of Fame and has won the American Cinematheque Award, Texas Exes Distinguished Alumni Award, and New Orleans Film Society Celluloid Hero Award.
