UL Baseball Coach Tony Robichaux, Winningest Coach in Program History, Dies at 57

Tony Robichaux, head coach of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette baseball team, has passed away at age 57. The university announced the news on Wednesday, July 3.

“Louisiana Baseball head coach Tony Robichaux passed away Wednesday morning with his family and loved ones at his side at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans,” a statement from the university read. “At this time, the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Department of Athletics asks that fans and the general public keep the Robichaux family and baseball program in their thoughts and prayers.”

Robichaux suffered a heart attack on June 23 and underwent two subsequent surgeries.

He passed away on Wednesday morning, surrounded by his family.

Coach Robe is survived by his wife Colleen, three children Ashley, Justin and Austin, and eight grandchildren in Lon Paul, Ava, Silvia, Liam, Olivia, and Levi Moody, and Evelyn and Roslyn Robichaux.

Robichaux took over the Ragin’ Cajuns in 1995 and became the winningest coach in program history, including a trip to the 2000 College World Series. During his time with the Ragin’ Cajuns, Robichaux led the program to a No. 1 national ranking in 2014, 12 NCAA Regionals, 18 winning seasons and four NCAA super regionals.

Coach Robe had 910 wins during his time at Louisiana-Lafayette and had an overall head coaching record of 1173-765-2. He had previously coached at McNeese State, where he is also the all-time winningest coach in program history.

Tony Robichaux Cause of Death: Complications from Heart Attack

On June 23, Robichaux suffered a heart attack. and underwent open-heart surgery the following day at Lafayette General Hospital. Coach Robe was in critical condition and underwent another surgery a few days later, according to local news affiliate WAFB.

On Wednesday, July 3, Robichaux passed away while surrounded by his family.
