At a time when the HBO hit series Game of Thrones has been under fire, one of the network’s executives is coming out in defense of showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. We often see the series finales of wildly popular shows disappoint fans, and Game of Thrones was no different.
That led to HBO’s president of programming Carey Bloys discussing the finale and saying just how difficult it is to wrap up a show that is a megahit.
“I think the guys did a great job,” Bloys said in an interview with Variety. “It’s always sad when a show departs, but that’s part of the TV life cycle, and life moves on. But obviously we’re really proud of the show.
“I think to a certain extent it was expected that for a show this big, there’s no way you’re going to please everybody. It’s roughly split with some people loving it and some people disliking it. That’s about what you’d expect. I think the guys landed a massive plane and did a great job doing it. But you’re never going to make everybody happy, nor should that be the goal.”
We the success that Game of Thrones had, this is exactly the kind of comment you would expect from an HBO exec. In fact, more than 19 million viewers tuned in to the finale on Sunday, May 19. Game of Thrones has also been one of the most pirated shows during its eight-season run.
As for the fans who were left wanting more from the show’s ending, they will have to wait until at least the summer of 2020 to see how George R.R. Martin wraps up his A Song of Ice and Fire book series which inspired the show. The finale two books of the series will be titled “The Winds of Winter” and “A Dream of Spring!” Let’s hope they are all worth the wait.
