The 2019 Kentucky Derby has undergone a serious shakeup. On Wednesday, May 1, trainer Richard Mandella announced that his horse Omaha Beach, the favorite entering Saturday’s race, has been scratched from the field, according to ESPN.com.
“After training this morning we noticed him cough a few times,” Mandella said in a press release. “It caused us to scope him and we found an entrapped epiglottis. We can’t fix it this week so we’ll have to have a procedure done in a few days and probably be out of training for three weeks. We’ll have to figure out a whole new game plan.”
Omaha Beach has an entrapped epiglottis, which causes difficulties breathing and would seriously hinder the horse’s chances to run the race.
Triple Crown winner Mike Smith, who was set to ride Omaha Beach, was disappointed with the news.
“I’m a little bummed out, but the horse is OK and we’re going to be all right,” Smith said. “The good news is it wasn’t anything that is life-threatening. I’ll be rooting for Roadster’s connections big-time. I’ll be a glorified cheerleader.”
The new favorite in the race is now Game Winner, who has been given 9-2 odds by the sportsbooks. Improbably and Roadster sit with the second-best chances at 5-1.
